French published a notice in the London Times newspaper requesting information on an accurate portrait of Pocahontas. He received twelve letters in response to the notice and his subsequent correspondence from Thomas Charlton, George Ellis, Thomas Gemmell, William Gemmell, Henry Elwyn Hyde, Miss McKim, Robert McKim, Eustuce Neville Rolfe, and Harriet Jane Neville Rolfe. No one seemed to know exactly where the original portrait could be found.
